Shadow work apps compared (2026)
We make one of these apps, so we have tried to be fair. Here is what each one actually does, what it costs, and who it suits, including the places where another app is a better pick than ours.
Before you read
We make one of these apps, Symponia, so read this knowing that. We have tried to be fair: every fact below comes from the App Store or the company's own website, with the sources at the end, and we say plainly where another app is the better choice. Prices and ratings were checked on 18 October 2026 and they change, so check the App Store before you pay.
The short answer
- If you want an app built only for shadow work: Symponia, Shadow Work App (Mastering Change), Mindberg or Zenfulnote. Symponia is the one that starts by helping you find your shadow (the seventh animal) rather than asking you to name it.
- If you want an AI journal that remembers you, on every device: Rosebud or Life Note. Life Note even has a mentor inspired by Carl Jung.
- If you want something free and gentle to build the habit: Finch or Stoic.
- If you want to talk out loud to a friendly AI about anything, not shadow work in particular: Tolan.
- If you already use The Shadow Work Journal book: Zenfulnote, its official companion app.
How to choose
Ask five questions before you subscribe.
- Does it help you find the shadow, or assume you already know it? Many shadow work apps open with a prompt like “what do you dislike in others?”. That is a good question, but it leaves the hardest step to you.
- Does it answer what you actually said? A list of prompts is a journal. An AI that replies is a conversation. Both are fine; know which you are buying.
- Can you talk, or only type? Some things are easier to say out loud.
- What happens to what you write? Check whether it is used to train AI models, whether memory is optional, and whether you can delete everything.
- Is it honest about what it is not? Be wary of any app that suggests it can heal, treat or replace a professional.

Symponia (ours)
What it is. An iPhone app for shadow work. You choose six animals that feel like you and one you cannot stand. The seventh is your shadow. Then you talk it through, out loud or in writing, with a small hand-drawn cloud, an AI that answers in a voice you choose. You pick how it speaks: short and direct, warm and plain, or deep and philosophical. There are also six short breathing and guided practices, and a check-in before and after each talk.
Privacy. Memory is off unless you say yes; you can read every note it keeps and erase them with one tap. No adverts. Our privacy policy says we do not sell your data or use what you say to train AI models. Your words are sent to Anthropic, the company that makes the AI, to get a reply, and spoken replies are made by ElevenLabs. Nine languages. Adults 18+.
Price. Free messages to try it. Then one plan, £19.99 a month in the UK, with the first 3 days free where Apple offers it. It includes 200 voice credits a week (about 20 minutes of spoken replies); writing never uses credits. Extra voice credits: 200 for £4.99 or 500 for £9.99.
Where others are better:
- It is iPhone only. If you use Android or want to journal on a laptop, Life Note or Stoic will suit you better (Rosebud has a web version too).
- It is new (version 2.0 came out in October 2026) and has almost no ratings yet. Rosebud, Stoic, Finch and Reflectly have years of reviews.
- There is no yearly plan, and £19.99 a month is more than Life Note (£9.99) or Rosebud's monthly plan (£12.99).
- If you want a written journal you keep and re-read, a journal app does that better. Symponia is built around conversation.
Best for: people who want to find their shadow rather than guess at it, and who would rather say things out loud than type them.
Rosebud
What it is. An established AI journal. You write or speak an entry and it replies, and its listing describes weekly AI analysis and long-term memory. It is not built around shadow work specifically.
Price. Free to use, its website says; Rosebud Bloom is $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year on its website, and £12.99 or £99.99 on the UK App Store.
Where it is better than Symponia:
Far more ratings (4.9 from 407 in the UK and over 3,000 in the US), and it works on iPhone, iPad and the web. If you want a daily journal that grows with you, Rosebud is the safer pick.
Best for: regular journallers who want an AI that reflects their entries back over months.
Life Note
What it is. An AI journal where “mentors” inspired by thinkers reply to your entries. Its App Store page names Carl Jung, Marcus Aurelius and Steve Jobs among more than 1,000 mentors, and says mentors remember past entries.
Price. Free accounts get 10 entries with a mentor reply in the first week, then 3 a week. Premium is £9.99 a month or £99.99 a year in the UK.
Privacy. Its listing says entries are encrypted, not sold or shared, and never used to train AI models.
Where it is better than Symponia:
Cheaper monthly, works on iPhone, Android and the web, and a Jung-inspired mentor is a good fit for shadow work if you like writing.
Best for: writers who want a Jungian voice in their journal, on any device.
Shadow Work App (Mastering Change)
What it is. Built on 25 years of depth-work methodology by Steven Twohig, according to its listing, with guided depth sessions drawn from live group work and a seven-facet map called The Construct.
Price. Free download. Paid items on the UK App Store range from £4.99 (Introduction to Shadow Work) to £79 (Digital Guide Education).
Where it is better than Symponia:
It comes from a named human teacher and live facilitation, if you want a structured course rather than an AI conversation.
Best for: people who want a teacher's method and course material.
Mindberg
What it is. A shadow work app grounded in Jungian depth psychology, according to its listing, with guided reflection, pattern tracking and dream interpretation.
Price. £24.99 a month, £59.99 for 6 months or £99.99 a year on the UK App Store.
Where it is better than Symponia:
Dream interpretation, which Symponia does not offer, and more US ratings (4.7 from 366).
Best for: people who want dreams as part of the work.
Zenfulnote
What it is. The official companion app to The Shadow Work Journal (the book), with tracking of triggers, moods and glimmers, guided prompts, dream journaling, meditations and breathwork, on iPhone and Android.
Price. £8.99 a month; yearly plans from £24.99 on the UK App Store.
Where it is better than Symponia:
Cheaper, and the natural next step if you already own the book.
Best for: readers of The Shadow Work Journal.
Stoic
What it is. A guided journal for mornings and evenings, with prompts, mood tracking, habits and voice notes. Topics include self-discovery, relationships and stress, but it is not a shadow work app.
Price. Its website says Stoic is free; Premium is on the App Store from £6.99, with AI plans and a lifetime option.
Where it is better than Symponia:
Free, on almost every device (including Mac and Apple Watch), with a long track record (4.8 from 4,884 UK ratings).
Best for: building a daily reflection habit.
Reflectly
What it is. A long-running mood journal that describes itself as driven by AI, on iPhone and Android. It has an Apple Editors' Choice badge on its UK page.
Where it is better than Symponia:
Simple, established and cheap to start. Not built for shadow work.
Best for: a light daily mood journal.
Finch
What it is. A self-care pet. You look after a small pet by doing short self-care exercises. It has an Apple Editors' Choice badge on its UK page.
Where it is better than Symponia:
Gentle, playful and hugely popular (4.9 from more than 78,000 UK ratings), on iPhone and Android. It is not shadow work, but it is a kind place to start a habit.
Best for: low-energy days and building small habits.
Tolan
What it is. A friendly AI companion you can talk to about anything, from music to relationships. Its website links only to the App Store (iPhone), and its maker describes building “voice-first AI”. It does not describe itself as shadow work.
Price. Tolan Lite £11.99 and Tolan Plus £24.99 on the UK App Store.
Where it is better than Symponia:
A very polished companion with a large following (4.7 from 6,722 UK ratings). If you want a general AI friend rather than shadow work, Tolan fits better.
Best for: open-ended chat with a friendly character.
Also worth knowing
Some smaller shadow work apps keep your entries on your phone only, with no account, for example Shadow Work Journal & Prompts (ERSAH ATMACA). If privacy matters more to you than an AI reply, that is a real advantage.

Questions
What is the best shadow work app?
It depends on how you like to reflect. For an app built only for shadow work, Symponia, Mindberg and Shadow Work App by Mastering Change are the dedicated options. For an AI journal that remembers you across devices, Rosebud and Life Note are the most established. For free habit building, Stoic and Finch. None of them is therapy.
Is there a shadow work app I can talk to out loud?
Yes. Symponia lets you speak and answers out loud in a voice you choose, and you can switch to writing at any time. Rosebud lets you speak your entries, which are turned into text. Tolan is voice-first too, but it is a general companion, not a shadow work app.
Is there an app like Rosebud for shadow work?
Rosebud is a general AI journal, not a shadow work app. If you want the same idea of an AI that replies, but centred on the shadow, Symponia (iPhone, voice or writing) and Life Note (a mentor inspired by Carl Jung, on iPhone, Android and the web) are the closest.
Is there a free shadow work app?
Most are free to download with paid plans. Stoic says it is free. Life Note gives 10 mentor replies in the first week, then 3 a week, free. Symponia gives free messages before you pay. Many small shadow work journal apps are free with optional upgrades.
Can a shadow work app replace therapy?
No. Shadow work apps are tools for reflection. They do not diagnose or treat anything, and they are not for emergencies. If something you uncover feels too heavy, talk to a therapist or your doctor.
Is my data safe in an AI shadow work app?
Check each privacy policy for three things: whether your words are used to train AI models, whether memory is optional, and whether you can delete everything. Symponia and Life Note both say they do not use what you write to train AI models. Some journal apps keep everything on your phone with no account.
What is the seven-animal method?
It is the method Symponia uses. You choose six animals you feel drawn to and one you cannot stand. The one you cannot stand points to your shadow: what you reject in others is often what you disowned in yourself, which Jung called projection. It is a lens, not a personality type. You can try it free at symponia.io/seven-animals.
